FAQ

Radioactive materials are a vital part of our modern society, being used frequently in hospitals, factories, laboratories and even our homes.

Many of the benefits obtained from the use of radioactive materials cannot be obtained by other means.

Doctors use radioactive sources to diagnose or treat various cancerous diseases;
Smoke detectors are composed of radioactive sources of small activities to detect and alert the user in time about fires in homes or various industrial/commercial spaces;
Products such as plastic wrap, radial tires and coffee filters are made in factories that use radioactive sources in the quality control process.

Radioactive material is generally transported in its most stable form, meaning shipment as solid material, but in the case of transporting radioactive materials in the form of liquid or gas, additional regulations and precautions are required, taking into account the appropriate packaging, strict training of the persons responsible for their transport – holders of ADR permits, emergency plans and measures in case of an incident.

The world philosophy of transporting radioactive material is:
„Security should focus primarily on the packaging”, the packaging being the first line of defense and the integrity of the package should be directly related to the degree of danger of the material it contains.

The shipper of dangerous goods has the obligation:

  • To ensure that dangerous goods are classified and authorized for transport according to ADR;
  • To provide the carrier with instructions and information and, as the case may be, the necessary transport documents and documents accompanying the goods (authorizations, agreements, notifications, certificates, etc.);
  • To use only packaging, large packaging, large bulk containers (RMV) and tanks (tank vehicles, demountable tanks, battery vehicles, CGEM, mobile tanks and tank containers) approved and adapted to the transport of the substances in question and bearing the marks prescribed by ADR;
  • Ensure that dangerous goods are classified and authorized for transport according to ADR.
  • Check that the dangerous goods to be transported are authorized for transport according to ADR;
  • To carry out the transport according to ADR prescriptions;
  • To ensure that all the information prescribed in the ADR regarding the dangerous goods to be transported has been provided by the sender before the transport and that the prescribed documentation is on board the transport unit;
  • Visually ensure that vehicles and loads do not have visible defects, leaks or cracks, missing equipment devices, etc.;
  • Check that vehicles are not overloaded;
  • To ensure that the prescribed hazard labels and signs are affixed to vehicles;
  • Ensure that the equipment prescribed in the written instructions for drivers is on board the vehicle;
    If the carrier finds, a deviation from the ADR prescriptions must not put the transport into circulation until it is brought into compliance;
  • A violation that could affect the safety of the transport will lead to the stop of the shipment as soon as possible, taking into account the safety imperatives related to the movement, immobilization of the shipment, as well as public safety.
  1. All transport units must have the ADR Label – Danger Transporting radioactive materials class 7 displayed visibly (on 3 sides of the vehicle)
  2. All transport units must have on board the following equipment for general protection in order to take general emergency measures or measures specific to various hazards:
  • For each vehicle, a hold of dimensions appropriate to the maximum mass of the vehicle and the diameter of the wheels;
  • Two independent warning devices;
  • Eye wash solutions;
  1. All transport units must have on board the following equipment for personal protection in order to take general emergency measures or measures specific to various dangers:
  • ADR kit
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Medical kit
  • Traffic light with yellow light
  • System for fixing the transport bed to the body of the means of transport
  • Snow removal tools and anti-skid chains

Transport vehicles must comply with ADR rules regarding the road transport of dangerous goods.

The vehicle is locked and sealed during the entire transport.

The means of motor transport must have the periodic technical inspection up to date.
